The Rovers journeyed to Fremantle on Saturday and fulfilled their share of the
engagement to play, but Fremantle would not meet them. There is nothing which
serves to damage the popularity of a game so much as disappointments of this kind.
After all, a game is a game, and both the public and the players must feel that the action of a few individuals in Fremantle (for it is not the playing members who
managed this affair) in spoiling an afternoon's amusement, just for the sake of airing their authority and letting the world know they are alive, is foreign to the true spirit of sport. Fremantle should have played, and then they would have had the
respect of all lovers of the game. If they were defeated they would not be the first
good team who had gone under; but certainly they must go down some day, and a manly defeat is better any day than trying to hold the premiership by any other means than by football. |
