A OVERWHELMING VICTORY FOR THE FORMER.
RECORD GOAL-KICKING BY LOEL.
West Perth had a very easy task on Saturday, when they met Perth on the Association Ground. Although it was anticipated that the former would win easily, such an overwhelming victory as they obtained, and the manner in which West Perth outclassed their opponents in
every department of the game, came as a surprise to the Perth supporters. From start to finish West Perth had things their own way and demonstrated their superiority by scoring 15 goals 11 behinds. (101 points) to 1 behind (1 point) scored by Perth. The one distinguishing feature
in an otherwise uninteresting game was Loel's remarkable goal-kicking, he scoring no less than 14 goals out of 15 registered. Interest is very keen in the goal-kicking contest between Loel and Wakely for the Vila trophy, and as the latter, who is an East Fremantle player, was up to Saturday leading with 36 goals to Loel's 28, the latter was afforded every opportunity by his side to augment, his total, and that he made every use of his opportunities the result proves. Loel is now leading by 3 goals and has one more match than Wakely to play, so that he stands an excellent chance of securing the trophy. The rain, which was threatening in the morning, kept off during the afternoon, and the ground, though somewhat slippery, was in fair going order. The attendance was but small.
The teams were constituted as follows:
West Perth - McPherson, Laughton, Morgan, Walton, Roberts, Wildy, Grecian, Cleland, Cullen, Loel, Morphett, Woodgate, Joyce, Taylor, Jones, Barnett, and Harris.
Perth - Boas, Edwards, O'Farrell, Dagnall, Glaskin, Orr, Sands, Southey, J.Messer, Coward, Kane, Ferris, Watson, Gee, Kennedy, Bourke, Hogan, and Webb.
The Perth men kicked towards the river and had the advantage of the wind during the first quarter. Boas had a shot for goal, but put the ball out. The Wests, in spite of the wind, then got the ball up, and Loel had the bad luck to kick a " poster "- the first point scored. He had another try shortly after, but allowed too much for the wind, only a minor point resulting. The cardinal and blues played all over their opponents, and Loel notched first goal a few minutes before quarter-time, when the score was-West Perth, 1 goal 2 behinds to their opponents' nil. On the change of ends, the West took full advantage of the wind. Loel soon added second goal to their total, and Joyce scored a minor. The Perth backs worked splendidly, but, despite their efforts, the Wests had things their own, way and Loel was kept busy shooting for goal. He proved himself an adept at snap-shots, at which he was much more successful than with place kicks, and splendidly backed up by Cullen, he succeeded in notching five goals during the quarter. Up to half-time, Perth had failed to register a single point, while the West Perth score was 6 goals 7 behinds (43 points). The continued success of the cardinal and blues had the effect of disheartening the Perths, and the former, with their superior stamina and organisation, completely outclassed them. The third quarter was a repetition of the previous one. Loel was unselfishly "fed" by the whole of his side, particularly Joyce and Cullen, and, making the most of his opportunities, he added 5 more goals to the already respectable total. Perth made several ineffectual rallies, but the play was confined to their territory almost the whole of the quarter, and up to three quarter time Perth had failed to score, while the West had registered 11 goals 7 behinds (73 points). The last quarter's play was last Perth could not withstand the Wests' attack, however, and Loel notched twelfth and thirteenth goal in quick succession, but from three shots following
he could only score behinds. A few minutes before time, Messer notched the first and only point registered for Perth. Loel managed to kick another goal, his fourteenth, amidst the applause of the spectators, and Cleland, kicking just as time was up, secured fifteenth goal for
the Wests, the final result being West Perth, 15 goals 11 behinds (101 points). Perth, 1 behind (1 point). West Perth thus won by a substantial majority of 100 points.
