Subiaco Break the Ice
Subiaco journeyed to Midland Junction, and against the greatly weakened Midlanders scored their maiden victory for the season. During the last few weeks the world-wide call to arms has thinned the Midland ranks - their team has been composed in the
main of residents of Blackboy - and the
executive have been hard put to it to find an eighteen. Two veterans in W. Watts and R. Hardey stripped in the clubs hour of need. Subiaco had first use of a strong wind, and piled up 8 goals 2 behinds to a solitary major. From thence onward they
never looked back, and scored their
initial victory by the substantial margin of 116 points.
For Subiaco Steele, Bant, Dawson and Gilmore were best; while Borthwick, Haynes, Gleeson, Blurton and Sermon fought doggedly for the losers.

The local team met Subiaco on the Midland Oval on Saturday afternoon last, when there was a small attendance. The home team were without the services of the Casey brothers, Meharry, Gast, Fred and Albert Watts and L.Carson (all of whom were unable to get away from their military duties), while W.Smith was also an absentee. The places of Watts brothers were filled by two old-timers, Wally Watts and Dick Hardie. |
