Newspaper report
Source:The West Australian 19 August 1935 - via Trove
Having been completely outplayed in the first half of the game and faced with the task of making up a leeway of more than seven goals, Victoria Park (Perth) rallied brilliantly in the second half, and, having drawn level soon after the start of the last quarter, played on to defeat Swan Districts by 18 points at Bassendean Oval on Saturday. The effort was the
more meritorious because it was achieved by a team which was far below normal strength. Three leading players - O'Callaghan, H. Davey and C. Parry were not fit and were unable to play, while G.Davey and Wormald played, despite the fact that they were not well. Victoria
Park was hard pressed to field a full team and at the last minute the club secretary (Mr. J. Elliott) was brought into the side. He acquitted himself well.
The teams were:
VICTORIA PARK (PERTH):
Backs: Elliott, Love, Warner
Half-backs: White, Fitzgerald, Walsh
Centres: Puddy Ransom, Crooks
Half-forwards: Jarvis, Bandy, Oliphant
Forwards: Wormald, Gook, Lucas
Rucks: G.Davey, Hetherington, C. Keightley (rover)
SWAN DISTRICTS:
Backs: Easton, Hunter, O'Keefe
Half-backs: Sinclair, Hunt, McInnerney
Centres: Krepp. A. Jones, Mosey
Half-forwards: Park, Forbes, Zilko.
Forwards: Hellmrich, Penberthy, Chester
Rucks: Murray, Randall, Sweetapple (rover)
Nineteenth man: Forward (did not play)
UMPIRE: H.Hooper
Making the most of its opportunities in the forward lines, the Swan Districts team goaled twice and took the lead soon after the start of play. Victoria Park started badly, the absence of many of its regular players being very apparent. Its marking was fairly good, and it was the
faster, but it was sadly astray in its leading. Swan Districts played with vigour and tenacity, and spared no effort to get the ball to Forbes, but succeeded only when the ball was kept in the air. A spell of brilliant play by Swan Districts in the closing minutes of the quarter gave the side a substantial lead at quarter time, with the scores at: Swan Districts, 5.2; Victoria Park, 1.4.
Playing the long, open game. Swan Districts had the greater share of the play in the first part of the second term. Victoria Park found itself fighting hard, but ineffectually. It was noticeable that Swan Districts' players were passing and punching the ball accurately, and that every man in the team resorted to shepherding as much as possible. They missed several
chances of goaling; otherwise the team must have led by a wider margin. The scores at half-time were: Swan Districts, 8.10; Victoria Park, 1.7.
Victoria Park recovered well in the third quarter, and completely outplayed Swan Districts. It scored three goals but failed with at least five other shots. The Swan Districts team was rattled. It pace decreased, and its marking and kicking deteriorated. A goal by Hellmrich allowed it to find its feet again, but Victoria Park was then In fighting mood, and
and it drew up to within four goals of its opponent. Tearing through the ruck, Victoria Park again goaled. Led by Kieghtley and Lucas, It bombarded the goal and Gook kicked straight. Then from 40 yards out he scored his fifth, and the team's ninth, goal, and Swan Districts led by only 10 points at three quarter time: 10.14 to 9.10.
A goal by Hetherington seconds after the start of the final quarter put fresh spirit into Victoria Park, and Lucas, with a goal placed the team in the lead a minute later. Then the team played splendid football, marking and leading efficiently and backing up in the crushes.
Swan Districts made desperate efforts to wipe out Victoria Park's five-point lead, but a goal by Hetherington dashed the team's hopes. Victoria Park, holding on well, won by 18 points.
Goal-kickers: Victoria Park: Gook (5), Hetherington (4), Lucas (2), Elliott, Bandy and Keightley.
Swan Districts: Hellmrich (4), Forbes (2), Randall, Chester, Sweetapple, Park and Sinclair.
Victoria Park's first rover, C. Keightley, was the best player on the field, and he played a big part in the team's recovery. Making a reappearance after a long absence, Lucas played splendid football, and was an inspiration to the team. In the second half. In the centre Ransom did well all day, and Crooks outplayed Krepp on one wing, while Puddey was in brilliant form after half time. Hetherington was a tower of strength in the ruck and a valuable forward, while Gook, with excellent marking and well-judged kicking, was in his best form. Great credit is due to Walsh, the new recruit, who, stationed at half-back, rarely made a mistake. His was a notable performance, as was that of Bandy, a highly promising half-forward.
For Swan Districts no player fared better than A. Jones, who, although over shadowed by Ransom at centre, played cleverly and effectively throughout the game. Sweetapple roved with vigour and skill, and Hunter kept goal well, his kicking-in being very good. Others who were outstanding were Forbes, Hunt, Mosey and Murray.
